Maturan Ceremony

One a rainy day at an opening near the bridge that connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan islands of Bali, I found this beautiful expression of faith and devotion.
It was the first day of 2014 when my boyfriend and I were riding a motorbike to visit Nusa Ceningan. On our way we ran into hundreds of devoted Hindus who walked gracefully with offerings in their heads. They gathered for Maturan Ceremony - a ceremony to thank the Lord for all the blessings and to ask for more blessings and protection in the future. Maturan is among the many Hindu ceremonies that Balinese Hindu people observe. As the people of Lembongan and Ceningan are mostly fishers and seaweed farmers, they believe that their livelihoods depend on the generosity of
the God of the Sea, Dewa Baruna. The offerings that they brought here were mainly presented for the Him.
